Character Details:
Name: Leopol Halsey
Alias(es): Leo, Leonidas Chauvoireaux, The Wizard Shandar, Merlin’s Apprentice
Race: Human (Witch)
Level: Advanced
Apparent Age: early twenties/late teens
True Age: 26
Type/Element of Magic: Elementalist (Fire)
Does your Character own a weapon?
-Several small knives
-Reinforced staff
-Cheap taser
Profession:
-Magician- What better way to hide than in plain sight? He always had an interest in magic tricks, hoping, as most young awk-weirds do, that such clever skills would help him gain notice from the fairer sex. Mostly, it just got him targeted a lot, and not by who he intended. But he never gave up, continuing to practice his sleight of hand until he was a pro. A natural really (though it had nothing to do with the actual innate magic he’d unlock later). As an adult, it’s become his calling, whether it be a show on the sidewalk, or a minor act for a larger event-- but he doesn’t do parties. He draws modest crowds for his novelty and charm more than anything; after all, with real magic abounding, who wants to see a pale imitation?
-Con man- Sleight of hand is useful for more than simple card tricks and illusions. Picking pockets while he distracts with fabulous displays, or else using his smooth skills to make a hasty retreat if he’s discovered, he might not make a grand living but he can at least get by. That, and his words are far more formidable than his brawling skills.
Other Skills:
-Artist- Aside from his flashier pursuits, Leo is also a skilled artist. Typically using traditional media such as inks and paints, his creative eye can be applied to just about anything. Sculpting, jewelry making, and even sewing are within his range, though his favorite use of these skills is through graffiti. It’s tradition for him to put up a tag in each town he’s had a show in, however large or small.
-Musician- Along with the visual arts, he loves music. His primary specialty is singing and guitar, though he can pick up some other instruments with a fair amount of ease, so long as they’re common. Piano? Probably. Hurdy-gurdy? Might need to practice. He has a broad range when singing, and would probably make more money doing that than magic shows. If only he’d apply himself.
-Acrobatic- Might not be a jock, but he’s very fit. Lots of practice avoiding bullies, and running was as good an excuse as any to get out of the house. It became routine at some point, and remains one of his few healthy habits. Likes to skateboard, if he’s able, and parkour has come in handy more than once. He’s a hard guy to lay hands on.
Powers:
-I’ve heard this one before- In addition to having an excellent musical ear, Leo passively memorizes sounds and voices, able to recognize them at a later date. Like a photographic memory, but for audio. Given the right equipment, or through magical means, he could even reproduce what he’s heard, with very little deviation.
-Mystic tempo- The best way to describe this sense is “magical synesthesia”. Leo can pick up on magical wavelengths through the “sound” they make, even to the point of identifying the school, if not the spell. He could even pick up traces of residual magic this way, as a faint song in the air-- but how long the “sound” lingers depends upon the intensity of the spell.
-Expert Liar- Extended time spent living with supernaturals, shifters, and other nonhumans has given him an edge over your average truth-bender. He's learned to mask the usual tells and signs to the point that even shifters can't separate his fact from fiction.
-Lightshow- One of his favorite visual tricks, for performances and artistic use. Using the space around him, similar to the aurora borealis he can create fantastic images and visuals. The colors typically vary depending on the air composition, but after adding the right components, he can make any color imaginable. No physical harm, aside from maybe an overdose of shock and awe. 8 feet around him, can only do it twice a day.
-”Multiclass”- He’s not a master, but Leo knows enough martial arts to hold his ground in a pinch. His +5 staff of cheap tricks isn’t just for show, after all. And if he’s unarmed, he might not be returning any hard knocks, but he knows how to use his opponent’s own force and lunges against them. In essence, he’s an expert coward and great at dodging. Jeet Kune Do! Primarily dodging, and wearying the opponent until one finds their soft/weak points, so the user can deliver a single decisive strike to end things quickly. And for that matter, may remove the Glass Cannon trait because of this. It'd probably balance better, and give boyo a fighting chance when he does get pinned.
Weaknesses:
-Smartass- He has a way with words, but it’s one extreme or the other. He gets himself into trouble as much as he gets himself out of it, thanks to the ill-spoken insult or overloud snark. He does tend to piss off the wrong people quite frequently. He's extremely blunt on purpose, generally trying to rile people up; mostly, so they'll be honest with how they dislike him. That is, because he's an asshole, not because he's a Witch.
-Pride- Stubborn to a fault, quite often when he’s backed into a corner, he’s more likely to go down in flames than to give ground. Difficult to bait him, but if he thinks it’s his idea...he might not make the brightest decisions.
-Acrophobia- Scared of heights. After a mishap at the top of a suspension bridge (don't ask), Leo has a hard time coping with anything too high up. Generally, this means anything that would be over 6 feet from the ground. Unless he's secured, or enclosed, he'd be riveted by fear. If he did manage to act, it could do as much harm as good to himself or anyone nearby.
-Addictive personality- Prone to get drawn into various unhealthy vices, from smoking and drinking to gambling, and at one point, obsessing over old, unsolved puzzles. It’s part of the reason he has so many tattoos and piercings. It has made him something of a general study in many obscure things, but it makes acquired bad habits that much worse. If he tries something new and there’s even a small chance that he likes it, he’ll probably try it again. Maybe just once more. He can quit anytime, he swears.
-Paranoia- Though he plays the coolguy most of the time, Leo is exceptionally paranoid, for various reasons. He always seems to think he’s being watched or followed. Most of the time, he can ignore it; but sometimes, his anxiety revs up fears both real and imagined, and it makes him more than a little manic. Sometimes, reason just doesn’t prevail.
-Doubt- Has a hard time trusting people. Probably ties into the fact that he’s something of a shady individual himself, but short of saving his life (and possibly even then), he has a hard time believing in anyone but himself. Even supposed friends have a monumental time of gaining his trust.
-Bent perspective- He has a tendency to lie, though mostly by omission. If it suits him and keeps his crazy life on track, he might bend the truth. This is especially true when people try to pry into details about himself; as it is, he has way too many webs to keep track of. It makes things hard for him if he ends up contradicting himself down the line, and especially for being honest with the people who actually matter to him. He can be honest, but for the most part, he's looking out for himself. So whatever fits the situation!
-Temper- He’s not easy to rile up, or at least doesn’t show it often. However, a chip on his shoulder and primal magic make for a rather dangerous combination, to himself as much as those around him.
-Wanted- Thanks to different aliases and lack of proof, Leo has yet to be taken in. However, he's likely listed as a person of interest with law enforcement in different parts of the province, thanks to his swindling ways. In addition, there is out-of-date information about a missing person (that might or might not be him) in both police and Hunter records.
-Gunshy- He's terrified of firearms. If he hears a gunshot, he tends to freeze up; if he does manage to cast a spell, there's a greater chance that it will probably backfire on him, or fizzle out completely. Applies only when a gun is fired within a 20 m range of him. Off in the distance, lessens the effect on him dramatically.
RP-Hookups:
-Posters embellished with fanciful, hand-drawn images proclaim that ‘MERLIN’S APPRENTICE! THE WIZARD SHANDAR!’ is in town.
-You might have seen him on tour with the circus troupe, or on his own in the streets.
-He likes to skateboard. If there’s a space for it, he’ll be there.
-Habitual drinker, he’s probably been to the bar more than a few times. And the smoke shop.
-There might be rumors of him being an actual magic user. But why would a real witch perform fake magic?
