Character Details
Name: Rev. Daniel “Red” Merton, S.J.
Alias(es): Father Red Merton, Father Red
Race: Human
Level: Advanced/Holy Faith
Apparent Age: 32
True Age: 32
Type/Element of Magic N/A
Weapons: Just a badass crucifix and a squirter that sprays holy water.
Profession: Roman Catholic Priest (Jesuit - from the Society of Jesus, a conventional arm of the RL Roman Catholic Church)
Skills:
Charisma/Persuasiveness: He’s articulate and sincere in his expression of the beliefs that stem from his deep faith in God and the Mother Church. If you’re going to buy something from a priest, you’d buy it from this one.
Communications: The Jesuits care about social justice, but they care much more about appearing to support social justice. Red is aware of how to publicize and protest - how to do things that will attract the media or sympathy or support from others. So when he joined a protest (see below) he convinced many of the other protestors to join him in wearing squirrel costumes - and of course they got more media attention.
Street-smart: As a youth, he was unafraid to visit rough parts of town, and once in the seminary, he was eager to visit slums on missions, and so has developed a very good sense of when danger might be approaching. He has the ability to size someone up and decide they might be trouble even before signs are super obvious (though of course I won’t be using people’s race information to decide this … I’m just trying to make him the opposite of naive)
True faith: As someone possessing true faith, he could potentially do what’s described on the race page for Those of Faith www.ebonridge.com/those-of-faith.html Red has had conflict with vampires who sought to suppress others - as described below, he sees everything through a lense of whether or not it contributes to social justice.
Powers: N/A
Weaknesses:
He is stubborn in his beliefs and ideas, such as all people have a 'good side' when most people have their own agendas, not all of which are of good standing. This stubbornness can lead him easily astray. He’s stubborn and slow to change his routines and activities, which is why he’s a bit on edge wandering in a rural town and sticks out.
Lurid imagination: He is likely to over dramatize a given situation and people, always assuming the conspiracy is greater than it really is, the threat comes from larger and more powerful forces than is probable, and just generally, a bit of a drama king or queen when it comes to what’s going on. He can get overly focused, causing sleepless nights and irrational thinking.
Too trusting: If someone professes Christian faith then it’s likely Red will believe whatever else they say. He is gullible to words, even as he’s street smart to sights and sounds.
Alcoholic: He is a high functioning alcoholic so he can get things done, but sometimes the wheels come off and he shows up in public plastered or incapable of acting well in a given situation. This could hurt his reputation and lead to trouble as he says things to people that he shouldn't.
Bleeding heart: Because of this stated passion for social justice, he will put himself at risk and disregard dangers when he’s trying to help an individual for whom he feels sorry: that could be someone wounded of course or also someone who is homeless, addicted. Etc.
RP-Hookups:
These days, people tend to say something when they see someone with a collar either because they value the faith, were disguisted by the church, or have a wisecrack to make.
He chats people up to see if they need ministering to or can help with social justice pursuits.
